Norway, Canada join forces in asking WTO to ban seal hunting

Reno, Nevada (CaymanMama.com) — Celebrities around the world have opposed the commercial seal hunt that inhumanely takes the lives of thousands of innocent seals each year.
In an attempt to ban this terrible act, Norway has joined forces with Canada in requesting that the World Trade Organization (WTO) settle its ongoing seal hunt disagreement with the European Union (EU)
Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere made an announcement on Thursday that Norway submitted a formal request for WTO assistance in arbitrating the trade dispute, which came to a head following the 27-nation EU ban of all seal products earlier this year.
The ban will take effect in August 2010.
According to the Associated Press, “Stoere says the regulation runs ‘contrary to trade obligations laid out by the WTO, adding that Norway ‘will not let this go uncontested.’ Canada lodged a similar request Monday.”
Animal rights activists and high profile celebrities have actively spoken out against seal hunting on the basis that it is inhumane and unnecessary. In contrast, Norwegian officials call seal hunting a sustainable and prudently regulated part of Norway’s wildlife management policy.
