Connecticut attorney general suing CVS for allowing sale of expired products

Portland, Oregon (CaymanMama.com) — Drugstore chain CVS Caremark Corp is in hot water for selling food, beverages and over-the-counter medications past their expiration dates and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal won’t stand for it.
Blumenthal said CVS is suing CVS for selling expired items including antacids, baby formula, cough medicine, energy drinks and foods including perishable dairy products like eggs, milk and yogurt in 20 of 45 Connecticut stores that were spot-checked over the summer.
He also said that half of the 20 stores were caught in a 2008 spot check.
“The company has certainly been on notice about these stores,” Blumenthal said. “They are well aware of problems related to expiration dates.”
The lawsuit, filed in Hartford, is seeking fines of up to $5,000 per violation, a total of which Blumenthal said may be “significant” enough to stop the sell of products beyond their expiration date.
CVS spokeswoman Joanne Dwyer said the Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based company committed their customers and will remove any expired products from stores.
“The health and safety of our customers is our top priority,” Dwyer said.
