San Antonio, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — The official Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center marks the annual start of New York’s busiest holiday shopping and tourist season.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was joined by tens of thousands of people in the crowded streets of New York City on Wednesday to watch the tree go from dark to sparkles in the annual tree lighting event.

The crowds also waited to watched spirited performances by Aretha Franklin, Shakira, the Radio City Rockettes and others.

Rockefeller Center spokesman Keith Douglas says the city’s most famous holiday tree attracts approximately 750,000 people to the area during the weeks the tree is aglow with lights and over-sized ornaments. That’s an average of nearly 400,000 more people per day who visit the center versus the rest of the year.

The tree, usually a Norway spruce 75 to 90 feet (23 to 27 m) tall, has been put up every year since 1931
