San Antonio, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Google Inc. is doing its best to help the struggling newspaper industry by partnering with The New York Times and The Washington Post in a new project called “Living Stories,” which debuted Tuesday.
This venture will be featured in an experimental “labs” section on Google’s Web site, and is aimed at making it easier to follow evolving news stories on the web, helping readers be in the know as soon as a story updates.
The “labs” section will contain news articles from both the Times and the Post, and initial topics shown on the service Tuesday included health care reform, executive pay and the Washington Redskins.
Neither paper is getting payment for their stories to be listed on Google, and there are no finite plans to sell online advertising alongside the articles, said Josh Cohen, a Google product manager overseeing the project.
According to the AP, “Still, Google thinks Living Stories can help newspapers adapt to a shift that is causing millions of people to get their news from online sources instead of print. That’s a huge problem for newspapers because they make most of their money from ads appearing in print.”
