Atlanta, Georgia (CaymanMama.com) — Beverage maker and longtime Super Bowl advertiser, Pepsi has decided not to advertise on the 2010 Super Bowl’s prime time commercial spots, bringing their 23-year run to a close so that they may focus on a new online-heavy marketing effort.
Since 1987, Pepsi has advertised in every Super Bowl, however parent company, Frito-Lay will still advertise.
Purchase, New York-based Pepsi did not disclose how much they spent on Super Bowl ads last year, but it did buy several minutes of commercial time. Ad time for the last Super Bowl cost an average of about $3 million for 30 seconds.
According to the Associated Press, “The Feb. 7 NFL championship game will be televised on CBS. Package delivery company FedEx also said Thursday it will not advertise again in the Super Bowl due to costs, the same reason the company gave last year for sitting it out.”
Pepsi has admitted that Super Bowl ads can be extremely powerful for marketing, spokeswoman Nicole Bradley said, but advertising in this Super Bowl does not coincide with their 2010 goals.
“In 2010, each of our beverage brands has a strategy and marketing platform that will be less about a singular event and more about a movement,” she said.
