When “CBS Evening News” lost their iconic new anchor Walter Cronkite after he passed away on July 17, the news industry seemed to dim a little.

Even after his death, the show kept Cronkite’s voice alive as he introduced anchor Katie Couric each night. On Monday night, audiences will hear a new voiceover featuring the deep voice of actor Morgan Freeman.

Cronkite recorded the original introduction, played at the start of most newscasts, when Katie Couric began her run at CBS in 2006.

“As comforting as it is to look back on the great career that Walter had, we’re looking forward now and we just felt it was the right time to make the move that at some point had to be made,” said CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus. “This seemed like the appropriate time since Walter’s passing to make the move.”

Viewing Freeman’s new voiceover as a positive step for the network, CBS says it will now give the network the flexibility to change their intros for any special reports or on location new stories.

CBS gradually transitioned the voiceover using a generic voice over the course of the last few months for special shows.

The change also gives the network more consistency, McManus said.
