Denver, Colorado (CaymanMama.com) — Following through on his campaign push to work on the country’s education, President Barack Obama announced a $250 million initiative Wednesday that will provide funds to train science and math teachers.

The initiative would also help Obama meet his goal of improving America’s students from average to above average in those subjects within the next 10 years.

Obama was not short on positive reinforcement. He gave out excellence awards in teaching and mentoring to over 100 deserving educators, but made no joke about how hard they would have to work in the future.

“I believe so strongly in the work that you do,” Obama said at a ceremony in the White House. “And as I mentioned to some of you, because I’ve got two girls upstairs with math tests coming up, I figure that a little extra help from the best of the best couldn’t hurt.”

Obama said the most important element in improving the education factor in America is the quality of the educators. A good teacher can have a huge effect on whether or not students pass or fail in the “STEM” fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Unfortunately, U.S. students fall far behind other students around the world.

According to the AP, “Obama said the $250 million in public and private investments for his “Educate to Innovate” campaign will help train more than 100,000 teachers and prepare more than 10,000 new educators in the next five years.”
