Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — In celebration of the life of America’s most prominent civil rights leader, President Barack Obama and his family attended a service Monday morning in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

On Friday, President Obama issued an announcement to the American people, encouraging them to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by participating in charitable acts.

As the nation’s first black president, Obama honored Dr. King by serving plates of food to the homeless in Washington. He was clothed in more humble attire than than the normal clothing of the leader of the free world, wearing a baseball cap and an apron.

Mrs. Obama, Sasha and Malia poured coffee and all were gracious, shaking hands and posing for photographs.

On Sunday, Obama took to the exact pulpit which Dr. King once stood to preach at Washington’s historic Vermont Avenue Baptist Church and used his trademark compelling words to invoke the spirit of the civil rights leader. He gave credit to Dr. King for enabling him to be able to stand before a captive audience as the nation’s 44th and only black president.

According to ABC News, “He called upon the American people to learn from the lessons of King’s generation and of those before him. Then, acknowledging the power of faith in his life, he assured Americans that the country would endure throughout what he referred to as a hard winter.”

“Each season the frost melts, the cold recedes, and the sun appears,” he said adding later, “We’re gonna welcome the spring.”
