Raleigh, North Carolina (CaymanMama.com) — Apple Inc. had a pretty good year in 2009 despite the consumer spending downturn.

In fact, over the holiday season, Apple posted its most profitable quarter ever, attributing its success to the massive sales of the iPhone and Macintosh computers led to an approximate 50 percent increase in net income.

Apple didn’t divulge any clues as to what it will unveil at Wednesday’s product event in San Francisco, though analysts anticipate the new product to be a tablet-style computer.

“The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about,” CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement.

What may have helped the impressive quarter was the rollout of the iPhone in several major new markets, including China and South Korea, which doubled sales.

According to the Associated Press, “Apple also got a boost because now it puts iPhone revenue and profit on its books when the gadget is sold, rather than deferring those results over the presumed life of the device.”
