San Antonio, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — It appears as though the “Titanic” has sunk again–except this time, the catalyst wasn’t an iceberg, it was an even larger reason.
“Avatar”, the new James Cameron sci-fi movie that has captivated audiences worldwide, officially replaced “Titanic” as the biggest international release of all time over the weekend, distributor 20th Century Fox announced Sunday.
The sensation animated film has sold $1.841 billion worth of tickets across the globe as it continues its sixth week ruling at the box office. “Avatar” is also only days away from passing up the astonishing $1.843 billion “Titanic” earned in 1997-1998.
According to Reuters, “In North America, “Avatar” may have to wait up to two weeks to sink the $601 million total of “Titanic,” Fox said. Moviegoers in the United States and Canada have chipped in $552.8 million, enough to replace 2008’s “The Dark Knight” ($533 million) as the second-biggest movie of all time.”
“Avatar” may have gotten extra viewership due to it’s 3-D screenings, which Imax Corp said have sold a record $134 million worth of tickets worldwide.
Until now, the biggest movie in North America is 1939’s “Gone with the Wind,” selling $1.5 billion at the box office.
