West Palm Beach, Florida (CaymanMama.com) — Decorating with strong floral prints can sometimes seem intimidating for the design-challenged. However, most floral patterns feature a range of shades and colors that easily coordinate with a variety of solids, stripes and plaid designs.
When looking for floral prints for bedding, furniture upholstery or in table linens, it is ideal to look for designs that will coordinate with colors that may already exist in the home. If the home boasts a lot of neutral shades, a monotone print of variations of brown, tan and beige would work wonderfully without feeling out of place.
Remember the saying “a little can go a long way?” Well, this is true about decorating with prints. Try to balance bold floral prints (http://www.pioneerlinens.com/yves-delorme-botanique-accent-pillow) with liberal amounts of plain surfaces, such as walls, carpeting, curtains and sheeting.
For example, when selecting floral designed bedding, maybe select the duvet color and shams in the print of choice and choose a coordinating solid color for the flat, fitted, pillow cases and coverlet. Same goes for the dining room; if using a floral tablecloth, complete the tablescape with solid napkins and placemats, or vice versa. An easy way to select the coordinating solid color is to match it to background color of the print.
When choosing secondary colors for more prominent items in the room, such as carpeting, curtains and bedskirts, select mid-tone colors. Rich camel and soft rose are great examples of tones that are not overbearing to the eye. However, when choosing accent colors, this is where the creative mind can run wild. Add a vase to a dresser in the bedroom in grass green, or add chargers to a table setting in bright red.
Upon putting the finishing touches on a room remember the design principle of repetition. While overusing a particular pattern is a no-no, repeating a single print 2 or 3 times is recommended. For example, if a pretty floral print is used for the duvet cover and shams on a bed, think of using the same print as an accent pillow on a reading chair or for the tie-backs for the curtains.
Bringing the outdoors inside is always a great way to liven up a home with color. Enjoy coming home to a garden oasis!
