Energy efficiency may be a buzzword these days, but for hospitals across the country it is a mission. And little wonder: Hospitals, which account for four percent of all energy consumed in the U.S., can achieve vast energy savings — while maintaining and often improving their quality of care — simply by choosing systems designed with sustainability in mind. Indeed, a new study presented at the CleanMed conference in Baltimore this May revealed that hospitals could achieve up to a 60 percent reduction in utility use by redesigning the way they use energy. And, that, the study found, translates into some $730,000 in annual savings for the average-size hospital.
Energy efficiency can be achieved in a host of ways, too — everything from the design of windows and lighting systems to the air filters hospitals use to reduce harmful airborne particles, keeping air quality high and lowering the chances of dangerous infections.
The benefits aren’t just about cost, either. The environment, too, wins from energy efficient designs. On average, a hospital emits approximately 18,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Cutting energy use by 60 percent means that 7,800 tons less escape to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. That’s the equivalent of taking 1,300 automobiles off the road.
But as significant as these savings are, both to the pocketbook and the planet, they can’t come at the expense of performance. That’s particularly true for hospitals, where patient care — and well-being — must always be the top priority. Products designed for efficiency and sustainability must also be designed to work — and work well. That’s why choosing the right ‘green’ products is of paramount importance.
The good news is that hospitals are finding those products — reaping savings even as they improve their impact on the climate, and on patients’ lives. Consider, for example, a hospital’s air filtration system. Good air filters keep patients and staff safe by removing harmful airborne particles — lowering the odds of infection and disease (a big worry in a hospital environment). But the best air filters — like those from Camfil Farr — do it while decreasing energy use, carbon emissions, and total cost of ownership.
Camfil Farr’s clean air solutions build sustainability right into their design. Using fine fiber media, the air filters provides high-efficiency, and high air quality, throughout their service life, in contrast to other products that decline markedly over time. That means they last longer and need to be changed out far less frequently, saving costs and reducing waste that ultimately ends up in the landfill. The innovative design reduces HVAC energy costs, too — by 25 to 50 percent — meaning less expense for the hospital and less emissions into the atmosphere. For hospitals, fighting airborne particles no longer means fighting battles with their budget.
That’s more than a win-win situation. It’s the future of the hospital industry. A future that’s sustainable, affordable — and healthier.
