Mount Pleasant SC Aviation Accident: Bay Area Pilot Killed in Plane Wreck

Mount Pleasant, SC—An unfortunate aviation accident occurred as a pilot attempted to land at East Cooper Regional Airport in Mount Pleasant on Monday, July 19, 2010. The plane crash claimed the life of a Bay Area native who was flying from Florida to South Carolina as a means of ferrying the aircraft to a client at the time, as reported by NBC Bay Area.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 29-year-old Dustin Rabe, a San Jose State University graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in aviation, departed from Merritt Island, Florida around 12 p.m. Monday. Though it appears he was scheduled to stop in Mount Pleasant, his final destination was supposed to be Holland.

“He was my one and only son… I was ware every time he went up in the air,” said George Rabe, the victim’s father.

As the Comp Air 8 kit aircraft he was piloting came in for a landing at the Mount Pleasant airport, however, something went wrong. Rabe reportedly radioed air traffic controllers, notifying them that he could see the airport just prior to the accident.

Witnesses alleged that around 2 p.m., Rabe’s aircraft attempted to land but failed to do so as wind pushed the kit plane off the runway. While Rabe tried to land for a second time, he was not successful in doing so. The plane reportedly stalled, crashing into a marshy area approximately 100 yards from the airport runway.

Rabe is the owner of Ferry Flight Express, a company that delivers, or rather ferries, aircrafts to and from Europe. Sadly, the Los Gatos pilot sustained fatal injuries in the South Carolina plane wreck.

FAA officials are expected to conduct a full probe into the deadly Mount Pleasant aviation accident.
