July 28, 2010 — A massive expansion of the Alta Wind Energy Center began Tuesday, breaking ground on what is predicted to be the world’s largest wind farm.
The wind farm, located in the California Mojave Desert, will be home to almost 600 wind turbines with a wind capacity of 1,550 megawatts of power. According to Terra-Gen Power, the developer of the wind farm, that capacity could be doubled over time.
Funding has already been secured for the first five phases of the project, which will produce 720 megawatts, and an agreement is in place with Southern California Edison to buy the power from the wind farm.
Vestas and General Electric will manufacture wind turbines for the project, which is expected to be completed by 2015. However, the project will still need to secure $2 billion in financing before it reaches fruition.
