Atlantis, FL—A mother of six who suffers from pain associated with a breast augmentation gone wrong says her insurance company would not cover the cost of implant removal surgery. Ada Serrano works at Subway and makes $7.50 an hour, leaving her unable to afford the much-needed procedure on her own, as reported by WPTV.
Serrano contended her ex-husband paid for her breast implants, though her leap from a B cup to a double D was seemingly not enough to sustain their marriage. She now cares for her six children alone, working with about $1,000 monthly pay.
To make matters more difficult, Serrano went to see a doctor after experiencing chest pains for about a month, only to find out that something had gone terribly wrong.
“They told me my right breast implant had ruptured. The left breast implant is leaking,” said Serrano. According to information provided by WebMD, ruptured breast implants can leave individuals at risk of cancer, and in some cases even death.
Serrano added, “It feels like a fiery liquid just sitting there burning… It hurts. What more do I have to be… do I have to be on a death bed?”
Serrano’s doctor called her health insurance provider, Molina Healthcare, to see if they would cover the cost of implant removal surgery.
However, a Molina representative stated the procedure is considered cosmetic, and is therefore not covered by health insurance. The implant removal operation can cost anywhere from $3,500 to $6,000.
To obtain adequate pain relief, Serrano must now use several pain relievers. In spite of this, “I’m a recovery addict. I don’t want the pain medication,” she said.
Serrano maintained that she did not wish to undergo breast reconstruction; she merely wanted the ruptured implants removed. Though she filed an appeal with Molina Healthcare, the insurance provider denied her coverage for a second time.
