Pakistan news of May 10, 2008

Deadlock on the judiciary restoration issue – Nawaz / Asif meeting in London did not bring results
Nation waits for May 12, PML – N to decide their position by the D-day
Rupee value slips against Dollar
Debate on need of new foreign policy ends
Stocks market falls due to the fall in value of Pakistani rupee

Deadlock on the judiciary restoration issue – Nawaz / Asif meeting in London did not bring results

London: The meeting of the party leader to finalize the restoration of judges did bear results. Nawaz Sharif left after the meeting saying that he will wait till May 12 for the decision from Asif Ali Zardari after which he will be deciding the course of action.

Nation waits for May 12, PML – N to decide their position by the D-day

Islamabad: The chief of Pakistan Muslim League (N) has sent message to it coalition partners that they will quit the alliance if the points set in Murree declaration about the restoration of judiciary are not complied with. The party members will be meeting on May 12, 2008 to decide the future.

Rupee value slips against Dollar

Karachi: The Pakistani rupee fell against dollar by 3.5% yesterday. The value of Rupee touched 69.45 per one dollar. The State Bank of Pakistan stepped in to stop the down slide to gain the level of 66, but this step taken by the governing bank was short lived. With the fresh down slide in the value of Rupee, inflation can be seen knocking the doors.

Debate on need of new foreign policy ends

Islamabad: The need to refresh Pakistan’s foreign policy and looking towards east was stressed by the Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. The Eastward drift in the foreign policy would not mean that the government will retrace its steps on the international commitment and work with its allies on war against terror but will not compromise on the national interests.

Stocks market falls due to the fall in value of Pakistani rupee

Karachi: The KSE-100 index lost 160 points yesterday. Index stood at 14,228.67 at the end of the day trading session. The falling value of the local currency overshadowed the trading sentiments.

Dallas Texas (Caymanmama.com) — The contraceptive pill has prevented some 200,000 cases of ovarian cancer and 100,000 deaths from this disease since its introduction nearly half a century ago, according to a study published in next Saturday’s Lancet medical journal.

Over the next decade, around 30,000 extra cases of ovarian cancer are likely to be prevented each year because of the pill, it adds.

The figure are extrapolated from an overview of 45 studies in 21 countries involving 23,000 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 87,000 who were otherwise healthy.

Women who had been using oral contraceptives were far less likely to have this form of cancer than counterparts who had not been using the pill, the review found.

And the longer a woman had been on the pill, the more the risk diminished. Ten years on the pill reduced the risk of ovarian cancer before the age of 75 by a third, and the risk of death by 30 per cent.

The benefit was still perceptible, if somewhat reduced, more than 30 years after the woman stopped taking the pill.

The paper, based on long-term research, sheds light on the long-term protective advantage of oral contraceptives when it comes to ovarian cancer.

Other research, though, has found a statistically significant increased risk of cancer of the breast, cervix or central nervous system among users of the pill.

Around 120 million women around the world used the pill in 2002, 80 million of them in developing countries, according to figures cited by The Lancet paper.

It is authored by the Collaborative Group on Epidemiological Studies of Ovarian Cancer, sponsored by the British charity Cancer Research UK .

In the 1960s, doses of oestrogen in the pill were typically double those of the 1980s, when the hormone formulation was slimmed down.

Even so, there was no apparent change in the relative risk of ovarian cancer among women who used the pill in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

In an editorial, The Lancet called for the pill to be made available over the counter, rather than restricted by a doctor’s prescription, given that, in its view, the benefits for cancer prevention and reproductive health so outweighed the risks.

“We believe the case is now convincing,” the British journal said.

New York, New York (CaymanMama.com) — Enrico Miguel Thomas draws on the 14th Street platform of 6 trains as he captures the shiny trains, green columns, the straphangers and the overhead fans with deliberate and quick strokes that he makes on the free maps of MTA using them as his canvas. He tells that these maps are very convenient to fold up and he keeps them in the Ziploc bags.

37-year old Thomas is a Pratt Institute graduate and he started drawing the subway scenes on white paper, but one day he got an idea to draw them on maps. He uses paint pens and sharpie markers to draw and he says that maps are even better than the drawing papers, and when people see at his drawings, they cannot even imagine that it is a map. In addition to that, he does not have to buy canvas as these maps are available for free, and he does not need to prime a canvas as the background is provided by the map itself.

The paintings of Thomas have attracted numerous fans, mostly MTA workers and commuters, and some of them offer him words of support and even donate funds. He says that his childhood troubles gave him his passion for drawing as he was burnt 60% from his father by water and drawing helped him to get out of the pain.

He sees art as an escape, a way to survive, a refuge and a way to be free. His favourite subject of drawing is homeless, because he himself is homeless and is able to relate to the struggles of the homeless people. Thomas has done 8 map drawings till now and he plans to draw 15 to set up an exhibition.

New York, New York (CaymanMama.com) — ‘Sex and the City,’ a successful cable show, ran for over a decade since it premiered on HBO that portrays a sex columnist Carrie and her three friends who seek love, sex and better clothes. With the new movie ‘Sex and the City’, it means that the 30- something characters who spend 6 seasons trysting, flirting and abandoning their partners will be 50 years old. Well, the most obvious question by critics is the fact that can they pull the show? Can ‘Sex and the City’ move beyond the age issue?

In an interview with the Associate Press, the cast of the movie said, “It doesn’t. Age is not avoided here. It is embraced and even savored, like, well, a nice, cool Cosmopolitan.”

According to Sarah Jessica Parker, actor and co-producer of the film said, “When we started cobbling together the movie, we knew there was only one road we could take.” She continued, “You cannot pretend we’re 32, still running around New York drinking with liberty and looking for interesting sexual partnerships. It would have been vulgar. None of us wanted to do that.”

The film does not begin where the series left off four years ago but in the present where Carrie is in 40s and is an editor at Vogue.

Atlanta, Georgia (CaymanMama.com) — Dr. Anne Nedrow, a medical director at Women’s Primary Care Integrative Medicine in Oregon Health Sciences University, receives daily e-mails from female patients that come from dubious web sites. According to one patient, there is a perfect herb treatment to treat poor levels of libido. However, when Dr. Nedrow checked the link, she found that there was hardly any scientific way of proving the effects of the herb.

Dr. Nedrow received one more e-mail that contained description about a nutritional drink. When she checked the site, she found that the drink was not affiliated to the the website that boasted the drink. Dr. Nedrow found that there it is very difficult to decipher between objective and subjective on the World Wide Web.

According to Dr. Christiane Northrup, a gynecologist and obstetrician, she recommends ‘Fertile Heart’ and ‘The Fertile Soul’ that dwell upon alternative and contemporary therapies. Dr. Nedrow recommends ‘Reynolds Risks Score’ that is designed for women to check whether they have any chance of heart attack.

Dr. Carolyn Runowicz recommends Gynecological Cancer Foundation and Susan G. Komen for Cure. According to Dr. Bernadine Healy, her favorite sites include National Institute for Health, Office on Research on Women’s Heath and Food Drug Administration.

San Antonio, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Public rage has now spread over the Sean Bell verdict in the whole of New York City and the protesters have created havoc by blocking the movement of traffic along tunnels and bridges. Protestors have given arrests openly leading to more than 200 arrests in the place.

They assembled at 3 p.m. before the police headquarters on the Red Brick plaza and were led by the 64 year old aunt of the deceased Sean Bell, Gloria Porter who is working as an education secretary in the New Haven city in Connecticut. She raged her protest against the verdict in the alleged shooting case of her nephew by saying that she will fight against it and has the support of the Almighty on her side. She showed a very strong grit and determination and said that she will not give up and definitely bend before God and pray.

The protestors were headed by the Reverend Al Sharpton to the Brooklyn Bridge who was accompanied by Bell’s fiancée and his close pals Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield. Renee Collymore, a woman from Brooklyn, who attended a protest organised near the Holland Tunnel supported the protest by saying that it was not a racial thing to be against the verdict but it was done on humanitarian grounds.

New York, New York (CaymanMama.com) — CNN reported that on Wednesday, the stocks were drooping as the Dow lost more than 200 points and prices of oil crossed the marks of $123 per barrel, the reason why the investors pulled back following the latest rally. The prices of oil settled at the record rate of $123.53 per barrel giving rise to fears about how the prices of other commodities are going to be hurt in an economy that is already going through a weak phase.

The economy has been showing signs that it has started to become stable and worst phase of credit crisis is now over. This perspective has driven the stocks with major gauges as high as 15%. But the market participants have stepped back due to the latest rates of oil. “You have people doubting that the rally is the real deal, that it has any legs, combined with a volatile situation in oil, and people stepped back,” says Chris Johnson, CIO and CEO of the Johnson Research Group.

The reports of March whole-sale inventories and jobless claims filed in the week will be released on Thursday. One report also showed that the consumer credit has jumped to $15.3 billion while the expected one was only $6 billion. AIG, American Express, Bank of American, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase were the biggest losers of the day.
