Louisville, Kentucky (CaymanMama.com) — Calling all health nuts! Do you often wonder about food combinations and how they affect each other when eaten? Many food combinations work well with each other while others may lose their own strength if paired. Some combinations to keep an eye out for are:

Brussels sprouts and grilled steak: Compounds in Brussel sprouts help the body get rid of the carcinogens which may form on meat when  cooked on high-heat.

Tomato and Avocado: Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, which is a great anti-oxidant. If avocado is eaten together with tomatoes, the fats present in the green fruit helps in absorption lycopene by 7 times.

Oranges and spinach: Spinach is rich in iron but it is difficult to be absorbed by the body if eaten alone. If vitamin C in the form of oranges is taken with it, spinach becomes a great healthy food. Other iron sources like broccoli and tofu should also be eaten with oranges, strawberries, tomatoes or red peppers.

Energy drinks and alcohol: This is an unhealthy combination, which may cause breathing difficulties and heart palpitations. In severe conditions, it may also lead to a stroke or heart attack. Combination of stimulants like energy drinks and caffeine and depressants like alcohol may put great stress on the person’s heart and nervous system.

Diet soda and alcohol: You can reduce calories by mixing soda with alcohol but you can get drunk more quickly. A few cheese slices and crackers have a good mixture of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, which may help in emptying the stomach slowly.

Breakfast cereal and coffee: Most of the breakfast cereals are iron-fortified and when you drink coffee along with your Wheaties and polyphenols, the anti-oxidants present in the coffee may hamper your ability to soak up iron. Other than coffee, more offenders include herbal teas and black tea which may reduce absorption of iron by 94%.
