Houston, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Alaskan residents are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

Local hardware shops and auto parts stores have seen a surge in business this week as Anchorage-area residents filled up their shopping carts with protective eyewear and masks in preparation of a possible violent eruption of Mount Redoubt.

According to the Associated Press, “Monitoring earthquakes underneath the 10,200-foot Redoubt Volcano about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory warned that an eruption was imminent, sending experienced Alaskans shopping for protection against a dusty shower of volcanic ash that could descend on south-central Alaska.”

“Every time this happens we do get a run on dust masks and goggles,” said Phil Robinson, manager of an Alaska Industrial Hardware store in Anchorage. “That’s the two main things for eye and respiratory protection.”

On Nov. 5, geologists reported a change in volcanic emissions and minor melting near the Redoubt summit. They then raised the threat level from green to yellow, and it quickly shot up to orange (the stage prior to eruption) on Sunday after noticing a response to a sharp increase in earthquake activity below the volcano.

The danger that residents face is far more than ash. They also face flying rock fragments, smoke, loss of power and respiratory problems for an undefinable amount of time.
