Quetta Balochistan - A new Taliban base to carry out cross boarder attacks into Afghanistan - US Ambassador

Washington (Dawn.com): A clear shift in focus of the US from South and North Waziristan to Quetta (Balochistan) is now being witnessed. US Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson, was quoted by Washington Post for stating that Taliban, Mullah Omar group has shifted bases to Quetta from where they plan to carry out cross boarder attacks inside Afghanistan. She said, ‘In the past, we focussed on Al Qaeda because they were a threat to us. The Quetta Shura mattered less to us because we had no troops in the region,’ she said. ‘Now our troops are there on the other side of the border, and the Quetta Shura is high on Washington’s list.’

Pakistan Prime Minister sets aside Rs.12 billion for development of new Pakistani Province of Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit (Dawn.com): Speaking to the public gathering in Gilgit-Baltistan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, told that gathering that the new province will have its own public administrative set up. He also announced setting up of a medical college and other socio economic projects including education, health, tourism and agricultural projects. He said that government has set aside a sum of Rs.12 billion for this purpose.

Punjab by-elections - PML-N seeks postponement of by election on pretext of bad law and order situation

Lahore (Dawn.com): Pakistan Muslim League (N) has requested the Punjab High Court to stop the Election Commission of Pakistan from holding by polls for the vacant national assembly seats. The Punjab Government in their petition has said that the law and order situation is not conducive for any such activity.

The Lahore High Court after receiving the petition has summoned the Chief Election Commissioner and the Attorney General of Pakistan to appear for October 2, 2009 in this connection. While the court up holds the EC move of holding the election said that, ‘To hold election is the responsibility of the Election Commission. The government has no concern with it, or authority to force the commission to delay the election.’

ICC Champions trophy update - Pakistan to face Australia in ICC Champions trophy league match

Centurion, S. Africa: Pakistan is set to face Australia today in the 11th Match of ICC Champions trophy series. Though Pakistan has already reached semi finals, this match has become more critical for Australia as their entry into the Semis will depend on their victory in this ODI.

Pakistan side would go into the field against Australia with some changes in the team. Cricketing fans could see the return of fast bowler Mohammed Asif. Pakistan team would comprise of probables Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan (capt), Mohammad Yousuf, Fawad Alam, Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Mohammad Aamer, Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Asif.

The Australian Teams probable players would be Shane Watson, Tim Paine (wk), Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, Callum Ferguson, Cameron White, James Hopes, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle.

Karachi Stock Exchange up by 65.90 points

Karachi (Dawn.com): Stock regained their position from the past days losses by 65.90 points. The monetary policy which was revealed by the State Bank of Pakistan project reflects no change in the discount rate which eliminated fear of the local and foreign investors. Health cash dividends also helped in renewing the investors interest. The KSE-100 index after the surge stood at 9,475.48 points.
