(Hospital Air Filters News) - The top-ranked medical center — renowned for its research and patient care — treated some 52,000 patients and 110,000 emergency room visitors each year. But there was one problem it hadn’t solved — because it didn’t know it had it.

A hospital’s air filtration system is essential to maintaining air quality by keeping harmful particles, including those that can spread dangerous infections, out of the indoor environment. But the system the medical center was using — based on electrostatically charged synthetic filter media — did not perform as efficiently and optimally as hospital air filters based on fine fiber media.

An educational session by a Camfil Farr local distributor and regional manager got hospital administrators thinking: The initial efficiency of their existing filters was high, but how did they perform over the long run? This was no small concern. Inefficient hospital air filters meant high replacement costs. Worse, they meant that those dangerous particles — and the risk of infection — could be worrisome. Indeed, the Camfil Farr Mobile Media Tester (MMT) had demonstrated that the rapid efficiency loss of synthetic coarse fibers would result in air quality conditions below guidelines recommended for hospitals.

So the hospital, which had been using synthetic filters, initiated two head-to-head tests. The first pit Camfil Farr 95% Hi-Flo fine fiber bag filters to the hospital’s existing Viledon 95% MF-90 bag filters. The second compared a Camfil Farr 95% Durafil 4V fine fiber V-shaped final filter with a Viledon 95% MV-90 coarse fiber (synthetic electrostatically charged) V-shaped rigid final filter.

In both cases, the test results were clear: real-life use of coarse fiber products resulted in early loss of efficiency. That not only meant that the filters did an increasingly poorer job removing dangerous particles from the air, but that they required more energy to push the air through — which drove up the hospital’s energy bill.

Indeed, after eight months, the Camfil Farr bag filter was at 93% efficiency, while the Viledon bag filter had dropped to 40% efficiency — providing air quality with less than half the cleanliness of the Camfil Farr air filter.

As for the second pair of filters, after just eight weeks, the Camfil Farr product was at 72% efficiency while the Viledon product was at 20% efficiency.

The conclusion was clear, too: By using an innovative, sustainable fine fiber design, Camfil Farr hospital air filters maintained high efficiency through their service life. That meant better quality air — and less energy needed. In fact, hospitals that have embraced Camfil Farr clean air solutions have already seen their HVAC energy costs drop by up to 30 percent.

By switching to the Camfil Farr air filters, the medical center was able to lower its costs while improving comfort and air quality for its patients, staff, and visitors. That’s enabled it to provide the best possible care, and environment — and to maintain its status as one of the nation’s premier healthcare facilities.
