On Thursday, September 15, 2011, non-profit organization Colorado Homeless Families (CHF) received two demonstration-model solar air heaters for its transitional housing facility in Arvada.

The solar air heaters are developed by Lakota Solar Enterprises, which is a joint venture between Fort Collins-based sustainable development organization Trees Water People and Henry Red Cloud, an Oglala Lakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

“These heaters are the beginning of a program that could help save CHF and our clients thousands of dollars,” said Connie Zimmerman, executive director and founder of CHF. “With energy costs skyrocketing, families on the brink of homelessness face the added challenge of paying their utility bills. These heaters provide an affordable and sustainable solution, enabling families to stay warm during even the harshest months of the year. What’s more, many of our clients will learn how to install these heaters, which adds the benefit of employable skills down the road.“

Families who install these units can expect a savings of 20-30 percent per 800 square feet on their winter utility bills.
