Mazda has gradually introduced its fuel-efficient SKYACTIV technology into three of its vehicles over the past 20 months, and it appears those changes are starting to take a big hold on car buyers. Last month, SKYACTIV-equipped models of the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3 accounted for 74 percent of the automaker’s sales, driving Mazda to its best May tally since 2008.

With 24,270 vehicles finding new homes last month, Mazda’s overall U.S. sales were up 19 percent compared to May 2012, greatly outpacing the industry’s average growth of 8 percent. The Mazda CX-5 compact crossover posted its best monthly sales since arriving at dealers in February 2012, moving 7,128 units for a 79 percent increase year-over-year. Meanwhile, an all-new 2014 Mazda6 helped sales of the midsize sedan jump by 72 percent over the same month last year, and sales of the brand’s volume leader, the Mazda3 compact car, rose by 5 percent in May year-over-year.

“Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology uses lightweight materials and precise engineering to get more miles per gallon, but just as importantly, it builds on the brand’s signature responsiveness on the road,” said Tom McGovern, general manager of Rosen Mazda Waukegan, a Chicagoland Mazda dealer. “Other automakers have focused on less-engaging hybrid drivetrains to improve fuel economy, but Mazda has taken a ground-up design approach so that its customers save on gas without giving up the fun of driving.”

The 2014 Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5 each come with the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies, which encompass the engine, transmission, body and chassis. With its SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine, the new Mazda6 returns up to 38 mpg on the highway, all while producing a healthy 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. That same powerplant is now an option on the 2014 CX-5, but the crossover’s standard SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine nets up to 35 mpg on the highway, making it the most fuel-efficient SUV on the U.S. market.

Though the Mazda3 isn’t expected to receive a SKYACTIV body and chassis until the reported launch of a new generation this fall, the current model is available with the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine and a choice of two SKYACTIV transmissions. When outfitted with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the 2013 Mazda3 sedan is rated at 39 mpg on the highway, while an optional six-speed automatic transmission will help drivers achieve up to 40 mpg on the highway. Like the 2014 Mazda6 and CX-5, the next-generation Mazda3 is expected to receive the brand’s new KODO, or Soul of Motion, styling, which has been characterized by features like a hexagonal grille and swept-back headlights.

“The efficient SKYACTIV drivetrains in the 2013 Mazda3 have allowed it to continue to post gains as the brand’s best-seller, but we’ve only just begun to see the car’s potential on the sales floor,” added McGovern. “When the next-gen Mazda3 arrives with the full SKYACTIV suite and its head-turning KODO styling, we expect to see unprecedented interest from a wide range of buyers.”
