New Study Finds Carpet Tile May Limit Stress in Healthcare Facilities

10/10/2014 (press release: CambridgePRGroup) // BURLINGTON, Mass. // A.J. Rose Carpets & Flooring

From patient difficulties to the long hours worked by employees, hospitals can be tense environments, but a new study commissioned by the parent group of Mohawk Flooring has found that the selection of flooring for healthcare facilities can play a role in mitigating that stress. Titled “The Influence of Flooring on Environmental Stressors: A Comparative Study of Three Flooring Materials in a Healthcare Setting,” the research was conducted by Debra Harris, Ph.D., of RAD Consultants, and it suggests that carpet tile is more effective at reducing environmental stressors at hospitals than terrazzo or rubber flooring.

The three flooring materials in the study were tested in an older hospital for 42 weeks in the corridors of patient units. Covering ergonomic and auditory factors, the research discovered that carpet tile absorbed more sound to reduce noise for patients and workers alike while also improving speech privacy. Additionally, carpet tile proved to be superior to terrazzo and rubber flooring when it came to air quality, aesthetics, walking comfort and reducing reflected glare.

“The new study funded by the Mohawk Group reflects what we’ve heard from happy customers following our carpet tile installations for healthcare facilities throughout the Greater Boston area,” said Barry Greenberg, retail sales manager at A.J. Rose Carpets & Flooring, a Mohawk dealer with locations in Burlington, Natick and Saugus, Mass. “Of course, there are more important factors than flooring when it comes to patient care and employee wellbeing, but using carpet tile is well worth the investment because it’s easy on the eyes, the ears and the feet, and those little comforts can go a long way in a stressful environment.”

Compared to rubber flooring, carpet tile created a 6 percent reduction in noise level according to patient feedback in the RAD Consultants study. Meanwhile, healthcare workers favored carpet tile over rubber and terrazzo by 11 percent and 26 percent, respectively. When reflected glare was measured, rubber and terrazzo each had a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of around 60 percent, while carpet tile registered an LRV of 24 percent, which is within the 20 to 30 percent range recommend by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA).
